Your home should be a space for comfort and relaxation. Many would agree that one of the most comforting feelings is sliding into a bed with crisp, freshly washed sheets and bedding. However, a large number of households own pets and many pet-owners enjoy sleeping with their pets, which can make maintaining the freshness of home textile products difficult.
According to recent studies:
- It can take up to six months to rid a house of pet dander because it can easily spread through shedding hair or fur and is hard to get rid of once it settles in (Dotson, 2022).
- 90% of homes in the U.S. have detectable levels of dog and cat dander (Chem-Dry, n.d.).
- A 2021 study conducted by Amerisleep analyzed bedding at different stages since the last washing. After one week, the pillowcases and sheets tested were found to contain between three million and five million CFUs (colony-forming units) per square inch (Hyde, 2021).

Performance Maintenance

To maintain the anti-static properties of your treated textiles, place a few wool dryer balls within your dryer and clean the lint trap before turning the machine on. If you prefer using dryer sheets, opt for bio-based, compostable and/or reusable dryer sheets. Standard dryer sheets are single-use, non-biodegradable items, but there are new, more sustainable options available. Brands may claim that their products are “pet-friendly” when treated with the ProTecht® metal-free antimicrobial technology.
Examples of acceptable pet-friendly claims include:
- Designed for easier removal of pet hair
- Prevents the growth of bacteria-based odor from pets
- Designed to be pet-friendly
